“The question that preoccupies me in the light of recent global violence is, Who counts as human? Whose lives count as lives? And finally, what makes for a grievable life?”
-Judith Butler, Precarious Life: The Powers of Mourning and Violence, 2004
Taking the time to envision your own place in this speculative queer cemetery and/or revisit historical or personal loss will allow for new possibilities in how we create memorial / grieve / preserve our collective lineage. We don’t yet know what this space looks like or how it might function. We are not seeking to model this space after some predetermined idea of what ‘queerness’ looks like, nor are we seeking to create one singular 'solution'. We endeavor to surprise ourselves with a multitude of outcomes- some might be possible (financially, ethically, legally) under our current conditions (laws governing deceased bodies/laws of burial). While other possibilities may need to reside within drawings, virtual realities, sculptural objects, performances and written texts.
What are you never getting over?
Stay tuned for upcoming dates for workshops, or for more details about how you can collaborate on The Queer Cemetery Project.
